Fiona obtained her BDS in 1981 and an MDS as a result of research investigating the dental needs of the elderly living at home. She worked in the Public Dental Service and the University of Manchester in England specialising in Paediatric Dentistry and Teaching. In 1999 the General Dental Council awarded her the title “Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry”. She obtained her PhD investigating dental trauma in children. She held the posts of Clinical Director of Dental Services and Director of Clinical Services for a large Area Health Service. She was Founder and Head of School for the Greater Manchester School for Professions Complementary to Dentistry, a school she established to train Dental Therapists and Hygienists. Fiona is currently the Program Convenor for the Graduate Diploma in Dental Therapy at the University of Newcastle, NSW. She has published widely in the areas of public health, paediatric dentistry and health services research.

John Boyens
Colgate Senior Lecturer in Periodontics and Oral Health

John graduated from the School of Dentistry, Dunedin, Otago in 1977 and worked as dental house surgeon at Napier hospital for two years before working in general practice in the United Kingdom. He returned to Hawkes’ Bay to practise general dentistry until 1986 when he completed a Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Periodontology) at Otago. On his return to Napier he continued to work in general practice with a particular interest in Periodontology. Dunedin beckoned again, and John completed his MDS (Periodontology) in 2001. He then established a specialist practice limited to Periodontics and Dental Implants. In February 2009 John was appointed the Colgate Senior Lecturer in Periodontics and Oral Health at the School of Dentistry, University of Otago, and he now works full time in this academic position.

Dr Karen Brook

I have been in specialist orthodontic practice for almost 30 years. My orthodontic training was at Louisiana State University in New Orleans where training was in both fixed and functional orthodontic treatment. Following two years working at Great Ormond St Hospital for Sick children in London, I returned to Auckland in 1984 and worked with Dr Robert Max for ten years before setting up in Specialist practice on the North Shore treating patients with both fixed braces and functional appliances. I am a past president of the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists and am currently the Specialist Representative on the NZDA Board.

Sue Dasler

Sue Dasler holds qualifications in dental therapy and management. She has spent 30 years working as a therapist and manager for the West Coast, Taranaki and Canterbury School and Community Dental Services. She has also managed a number of child health/school health services. Sue’s current position is Senior Advisor for the Ministry of Health, a position she has held for the last three years.
The desire to improve oral health care and outcomes for children and adolescents has been a great incentive for her work in supporting the reinvestment in New Zealand’s oral health services for young people. Sue has been actively involved in rethinking how we deliver oral health care in the regions and championing change in the sector.

Massimo Giola, MD, PhD
Consultant Physician (Internal Medicine/Infectious Diseases), Medical Dept., Southland Hospital, Southern DHB
Born in Milan (Italy) in 1966, Massimo graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1991 at the University of Pavia (Italy), where he subsequently specialized in Infectious Diseases in 1996. He obtained in 2008 at the University of Insubria (Varese, Italy) a Research Doctorate in Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology.
Massimo worked at Varese Regional Hospital (Varese, Italy) from 1993 to 2009, initially as a trainee and from 1996 as a staff specialist in Internal Medicine/Infectious Diseases. In February 2009 he moved to New Zealand to take a Consultant Physician position at Southland Hospital in Invercargill, wherehe is the Chairperson and Medical Advisor of the Infection Control Committee and a member of the Drugs & Therapeutics Committee; from December 2010 Massimo will move to Bay of Plenty to work in the same position at Tauranga Hospital.

Dustin Habeck
NZ Team Leader Sirona Dental Systems
Dustin Habeck graduated with Hons from Ferris State University with a bachelors degree in Business Marketing. After moving to NZ in 2003 he’s enjoyed moving up through the dental industry and at 29 was given the chance to be the NZ Team Leader for Sirona Dental Systems.
Sirona Dental Systems (formerly Siemens) has been around since 1877. Most recently Sirona celebrated its 5th anniversary of going direct-to-market setting up its own factory direct distribution in 2005.
Dustin has 2 boys and enjoys family, golf and skiing.

Christine Jacques
Clinical Hypnotherapist

Christine Jacques completed a 3 year diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy with the New Zealand School of Clinical Hypnotherapy and has been practicing in Wanaka since 2005. Her training includes large components of Counselling and Psychology as well as special courses in Pain Management, Stress Management, Human Sexuality, Self Hypnosis, Professional Sports Hypnosis, Forensic Questioning and Regression.
Christine's former employment has included working in logistics for international Mountaineering companies and in operations for an international retail chain as well as working as a trainer for managerial staff for a large Australasian company. In her Hypnotherapy practice she is combining those logistical, human resource management and training skills in a profession that she is very passionate about.
Christine has been on the Committee of the New Zealand Society of Clinical & Applied Hypnotherapy since 2008.

Erin Mahoney BDS MDSc PhD FRACDS

Erin Mahoney is a Paediatric Dentist presently working at the Hutt Valley DHB. Erin became a dentist in 1995 after surviving 5 fun filled years at the University of Otago. She then worked as a house surgeon in Waikato before trying her hand a private practice in Auckland. She decided treating adults was too hard work so went to Sydney where she completed her specialty training in Paediatric Dentistry. To put off real life she stayed on at the University of Otago to complete her PhD in dental enamel defects. Erin has won numerous prizes an publishes widely. She now balances working at the Hutt Valley DHB an looking after three young children.

W. Murray Thomson
Professor of Dental Epidemiology and Public Health
University of Otago
A PDO earlier in his career, Murray Thomson describes himself as “a recovering dentist”. He is an award-winning researcher whose prolific output covers a wide range of conditions, approaches and study designs. He runs the oral health component of the world-renowned Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study and teaches dental public health and epidemiology at the School of Dentistry. He is also Editor of the NZ Dental Journal and Associate Editor of Special Care in Dentistry.
